"Angel" WIP

Thought I would work on this tonight.  Very rarely do I paint in the evening, but not much on TV.  Laying down the base colors.

Angel WIP

Trying to come up with what to paint.  I have always been happy with my painting of "Sin", so I thought maybe a good time for a companion piece.  This one is of an Angel, but not sure which one at this time.  This is very large.

Brice WIP

Coming along nicely I think....

Brice WIP

My youngest son requested a painting, first of a portrait of a goat, which I turned down.  He then said to paint his Facebook photo, which is coming out rather well I think.  I am painting in a totally new style, so we will see what the end result will be.

Brice WIP

Starting a new painting today of my son Brice.  Started to work this time from the background to the subject.  Usually do it the other way around because I am never sure what the background will be.  In this too, the background may totally change.  Just blocking in colors right now.

I Wish

You reach a point where you figure it is just finished.  I know some artists can never do that, but when you're done, you're done.  I have decided to call this painting "I Wish"

Girl Kissing Frog WIP

So this is coming along fairly well.  Had a light blue background which I did not like at all.  Needed something to make it a little more interesting, so maybe the white mist coming up represents her Prince starting to form.

Girl Kissing Frog WIP

Got some more work done on the Girl Kissing Frog painting.  Yes I know the hair is not quite right on the forehead.  But it is coming along nicely I think....

Girl Kissing Frog WIP

Did not have much time this morning since I slept late.  I painted in the frog using the acrylics with very much a watercolor technique...

Girl Kissing Frog WIP

Well this seems to be coming along nicely. Slowly getting some background in to give the face some shape.  Always difficult for me to just work with white canvas backgrounds.

Girl Kissing Frog WIP

This is a couple of hours of work on this new painting.  Presently it is a girl kissing a frog, but who knows, maybe it will turn into her first kiss.  Really happy with the way this is going right now.

Just a quick landscape using some new techniques I am trying out.  Fun, just for fun....

Winston Portrait WIP

Commission of a parrot portrait.  In exchange for a cage for my one legged parrot Simba, they want a portrait of the parrot which had been it's previous occupant.  Just blocking in colors and trying to figure out the best way to paint feathers.  It will be an adventure....

Russian Princess WIP

Added hair color today, which is sort of a compromise.  The model had bright metallic pink hair.  Still need to place in the highlights.    Did not know if the little blue flowers would work, but seem to be ok, with maybe a glaze of them.  Will see on Tuesday morning.

Russian Princess WIP

Layer after layer trying to get the skin tones acceptable.  The hair is really throwing me off right now.  The girl actually has bright metallic pinkish/red hair. Not sure whether to stick with that or go brown.

Hilton Head Painting

SOLD - I have done 2 paintings so far based on photographs I took while at Hilton Head.  This is a shot I took while standing out in the ocean.  Yes, there was no one else around at this time.  This painting is regular acrylics on an 8 x 10 canvas.

"Russian Princess" WIP

Getting back to this portrait, today I have added a black background and added more white to the dress.  After not seeing this painting for a week, being on vacation, I was very pleased she actually looked like I wanted, Russian.  Did not want to start in on the flesh colors this morning due to time, but will tweek that starting tonight or tomorrow.

Russian Princess Portrait on the easel

Been working on this portrait for a couple of hours.  Laying in colors but trying to keep it simple. First time I have used linen and not canvas.  I was going to change her hair color to brown, but may keep it as it is, sort of a flourescent orange red.

Companion Landscape

Since I had two of these panels, I created a second companion piece to the first Summer Tree.  I guess this would be Fall Tree...

Little fun landscape

SOLD
Since I had some time Monday morning.  I took one of the old pictures that I bought at a yard sale, had painted it black last week, I proceeded to do this with just rags and paint. Ok I did use a liner brush for swing.  Just a quick 45 minute painting.

When You Have a Lemon, Make Lemonade

Did this painting a few months ago.  When I tried to varnish the painting, there were problems.  So I just added some, well lets just say stuff....  I also did not fix what the varnish did.

Girl in Blue Finished

The finished painting of the Girl in Blue.  Guess I will have to come up with a better title though.

Girl in Blue

Started to do a little more work on this painting.  I just do not have the desire lately to sit down and spend the time painting. I need to get motivated, but just have not been able to. Maybe with First Friday coming up this week, I will be able to finish this in the next couple of days.

Young Girl on Easel 5/21

Still trudging along on this one.  It seems the colors are still just getting sort of blocked in.

Young Girl on the Easel

Starting a new painting of this young girl  Been blocking in the colors and having a difficult time with the face. Was working  in the Renditions main gallery this weekend, but due to the heat and breeze the paint would dry very quickly, even though I am using Atelier Acrylics.  So after much frustration I brought it home and worked a while on it this evening, getting it a little more presentable.
This will be part of a series of portraits that I will be doing for people on commission for only $300 for a 16 x20 portrait.

Facebook Portrait Project - Lindsey Morris

Lindsey is the second in my Facebook Portrait Project.   Still drives me crazy with the digital camera in not getting colors quite right.  But this is the best I can get at this time.  Weird thing is I really like my rendition of Frankenstein....

Facebook Portrait Project - Lindsey

This is getting close to completion.  Each time I do one of these portraits, I learn something new to try and so it is with this one.  Still have a few ideas for the background, but a lot of times I believe if the person in the portrait carries it off, there is no need for a background. It is about them after all.

Facebook Portrait Project - Lindsey

I guess I can show this now.  Of course it is not finished.  I looked at this and thought where did her chin go, so I went back and made some touch ups and will need to work on the neck area some more to bring it up correctly.  You will see that in the next post.   Next time I work on this will probably be at First Friday.

Facebook Portrait Project - Lindsey on the Easel

Two days in on this portrait. The above is just a small portion of the painting.  Want to keep this top secret since Lindsey thinks all my paintings are of her.  This one has sort of a 50s pulp cover feel to it in the painting style.

New Painting April 15th, 2012

Started a new painting today. For a change I decided to put in the background first, something I very rarely do. Right now I am just blocking in some color

Facebook Portrait Project - David Houston

There is a point you just say "Done". Start analyzing too much and you might as well start over. I am happy with this and learned a lot, especially about using Atelier Acrylics.

Portrait Project - David Houston on the Easel

I am really getting into this painting. The new Atelier Acrylics are great to work with, but you have to be careful not to get paint in the wrong spot. With regular acrylics you can just wipe off the dried layer below, but with these you also may take off the paint below too.

Portrait Project - David Houston on the Easel

I have just let myself go with the paints here. I know this painting has a lot more to go, but I really want to keep it rough. I don't want to be too detailed. I have to be careful not to get too specific, but to leave it to the viewer's eye.
His glasses right now are just put in to give me an idea of what is going on with his face. They will get more detail and I think they are a very important part of this painting.
What will make this painting is that I think something needs to be dangling from his hand. I have a few ideas.

Fairy on the Easel Thursday Work

Worked on the wings and her hair tonight. Not happy with the hair. That is not unusual, but will come together at some point. Overall, pretty happy how this is working out.

Fairy on the Easel Wednesday Work

The benefit of the camera now comes into play. I can now see that I have put in way too much of the brighter green for the moss. As they say, less is better sometimes.

Fairy on the Easel

Totally took out the background and repainted it black. Came back in and put in a little softer wings. Skulls are being "fleshed" out.
